Course Syllabus
This course is designed to boost your reading and writing skills. Once your learn, practice, and apply these strategies, your confidence and grades will improve.
By the end of this class, you will be able to:
Not only will you have to work hard independently, but you will also have to work effectively with other students and with me. Taking risks is extremely important for success, and no one wants to be ridiculed.
Guidelines for Success (ACHIEVE: Activity, Conversation, Help, Integrity, Effort, Value, Efficiency) 50 points each week are devoted to ACHIEVE points.
Grades are based on a point system. Class work and ACHIEVE are roughly 70%. Assessments are about 30%. At the end of each grading period, points will be totaled and the grades will be determined by the percentage of the total possible points.
Grading Scale: 90 to 100% = A
80 to 89% = B Grades can be accessed in AERIES.
70 to 79% = C
60 to 69% = D
0 to 59% = F
Please check your grade periodically to make sure all your make-up work has been completed and recorded. You should know your current grade long before Deficiency Notices are issued.

Classroom Procedures
Entering the Classroom:
1. Be in your seat with all your materials when the tardy bell rings. This means pencils are already sharpened before the tardy bell rings. This also means go to the restroom and get drinks of water before the tardy bell rings. Begin work on the Start-up Activity when the bell rings. In addition, all tardies are reported to the attendance office according to school policy.
2. Continue to quietly work on this activity until I signal for your attention.
3. No food or drinks in class. The exception is water in a sealed container.
4. Cell phones must be turned off or set to vibrate and put away, so they don't become a distraction. Students will have Chromebooks when necessary to access internet or assignments.
5. Once Chromebooks are distributed, they should already be charged before coming to class.
6. Late work is accepted for partial credit/points (50%).
Materials:
The materials you will need to bring to class are a pencil, eraser, your independent reading book, and Chromebook. All other materials will be provided for you.
Daily assignments are written on the board and most assignments are checked during class.
When you receive your assignments, look them over and put them in your folder. Over the course of this year, you will build a portfolio of your work.
Student responsibilities after an absence:
Anytime you are absent, you will need to make up the work that you missed. Make up work will be accepted until the 5th school day after original collection date. Exceptions will be made for extended absences.
Possible consequences for Learning Community violations:
Loss of ACHIEVE points
Change in seating assignment
Student Incident Report (Green Sheet: restorative justice protocol)
Parent contact
Referral to Intervention Center
Referral to Assistant Principal
Ending class:
A couple of minutes before the end of class, all students will return to their assigned seats for final announcements. Students will be excused by rows after the bell rings.

- Use Annotation strategies while you read such as: Word Mapping, Paraphrasing,
- Use PENS strategy to help with your writing.
- Be a productive member of our Learning Community.
- Set and achieve long-term goals.
